Apps for Change: Building Community-Owned Spaces in a Big Tech World

I am still buzzing from our recent The Digital Nonprofit event! We were joined by Michael Foster from the Newsmast Foundation for a deep dive into Apps for Change: Building Community-Owned Spaces in a Big Tech World. It was an eye-opening session that challenged us to rethink our reliance on “rented” spaces on major social media platforms and showed us how we can build digital homes that truly reflect our values.

Here are the top seven insights we gathered from the showcase:

1. OWNING YOUR DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE

We learned that relying on Big Tech is like renting an account you can lose at any moment due to a sudden algorithm shift or policy change. By owning the underlying infrastructure, nonprofits ensure they can never be de-platformed or silenced by a corporate entity. This shift gives our communities permanent control over their digital destiny and data.

2. ESCAPING BIG TECH TOXICITY

Michael highlighted how platforms like Facebook often prioritize divisive content to drive engagement, which can pull communities apart. Ethical, community-owned apps provide a calm, independent space where shared values and genuine connection come first. We can finally build digital town squares that focus on the mission rather than the “hurly-burly” of the outside world.

3. THE POWER OF DECENTRALIZATION

Using technologies like ActivityPub, organizations can create an “archipelago” of independent but interconnected servers. This means your community stays autonomous and private while still having the ability to interact with a wider global network. It offers the perfect balance of local control and the reach of the open social web.

4. BRIDGING THE TECH EQUITY GAP

We were amazed to find that high-quality mobile apps, which normally cost upwards of $40,000 to develop, are now accessible to small nonprofits for as little as $50 a month. The Newsmast Foundation uses a foundation model to ensure small newsrooms and charities have the same powerful tools as big corporations. This levels the playing field for mission-driven organizations across Canada and beyond.

5. RECLAIMING SAFETY THROUGH LOCAL MODERATION

On these apps, moderation isn’t handled by a distant AI or a corporate office; it’s managed by the community itself. This ensures that guidelines are enforced by people who actually understand the nuances and needs of the group. It creates a much safer, more supportive environment for discussing sensitive topics or marginalized experiences.

6. SEAMLESS CONTENT INTEGRATION

Whether your organization uses Ghost or WordPress, these apps can pull your content directly into a social feed for your members. This allows your audience to read your latest news and discuss it in the same space without ever leaving the app. It effectively turns a static website into a dynamic, living community hub.

7. GLOBAL CONNECTIVITY WITH LOCAL CONTROL

We saw inspiring examples of how Brazilian museums and African scientists are using these tools to collaborate across borders. By using a universal codebase, nonprofits can scale their impact and connect with peers worldwide while maintaining their unique branding. The future of social change is clearly collaborative and interconnected.
