EVENT REPORT: Learning from a loss – digital lessons from the 2013 BC NDP Election campaign

It’s often said that we can learn more from failure than success. At Net2van’s April 1 meetup we took a look at the BC NDP’s 2013 election digital strategy. Michael Roy talked about successful tactics and tools, and the lessons he learned. Despite the failure of the campaign, the digital effort – online engagement, fundraising, and outreach – broke new ground in many areas.

We are happy to share video, slides and photos from the event.

[Feb 20] Cyberbullying and Youth: What are we really talking about?

RSVP: http://goo.gl/V6Ugw8

With unprecedented access to technology, young people today are carrying the internet in their pockets and communicating with their peers more than ever before. But what happens when their behaviour turns negative and schoolyard bullying moves online? Educators report that cyberbullying is as big an issue as smoking and drugs among youth today. Anonymity and peer pressure can fuel negative online behaviour with severe and often tragic consequences. But where does this behaviour start? What are the various forms and consequences of cyberbullying? Most importantly, what are we supposed to do about it?

Join YWCA Metro Vancouver and HootSuite for an interactive panel discussion with a group of experts, who will answer these questions. In honour of Pink Shirt Day, a national day of bullying prevention, we will explore themes surrounding cyberbullying and discuss solutions for parents, teachers, youth workers and peers to help mitigate the harmful impacts cyberbullying has on youth today.

Panelists:

  • Sioned Dyer, Mentorship Coordinator, Youth Facilitator. YWCA Metro Vancouver
  •  Jesse Miller, Founder, Mediated Reality
  • Sgt. Mathias Van Laer, E Division RCMP Integrated Child Exploitation
  • Jennifer Shapka, PhD, Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology with a focus on adolescent behaviour
  • Chris Bolton, National Youth Ambassador at the Next Big Thing Foundation

Agenda

5:30 – 6:00: Registration

6:00 – 6:30: Mingling / networking / refreshments

6:30 – 7:30: Panel Discussion and Q&A

7:30 : Wrap up

Who would you recommend for Net2van’s conference?

The Digital Nonprofit-logo-crop

NetSquared Vancouver (aka Net Tuesday) is planning our fourth annual conference for nonprofit technologists and this year we’re inviting senior leaders from the charitable sector to join the conversation.

I’m reaching out to you because you are connected and a leader when it comes to nonprofits creating real online strategies. Can you recommend two speakers to me? (nominating yourself is acceptable!)

What I’m looking for: a strategic thinker and innovator with an expertise in the nonprofit sector who can help nonprofit leaders think clearly about what’s important as their organizations inevitably become internet-centric.

We are recruiting experienced, polished speakers who have the energy to captivate an audience of approximately 100.

Format: our target length for presentations is 20 minutes (with one opportunity for a 1 hour keynote)

Honorarium: $200

Location: given our budget we are targeting speakers within a 4 hour radius

The nomination

Please forward the presenter(s) name, email address and one sentence about their area of expertise. If you have a link to a video of a prior presentation even better!
