We have a great lineup of events scheduled for the next couple months.
NETSQUARED CAMP
Saturday, June 1
NetSquared Camp is our annual signature event. This unconference brings together Vancouver’s nonprofit technology community for a day of education and conversation, and it’s the best place to discover the emerging trends that are going to change your work.
Nonprofit staffers will find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for those not experienced with technology, and many chances to ask questions of tech-experienced nonprofits and experts.
Techies will find opportunities to hear the real-world stories of nonprofit clients, and put their own expertise to social good — as well as the potential for lasting relationships (be they paid or volunteer) with leading organizations in our community.
Activists and community organizers will see and be given the chance to present on successful uses of technology for social change. We’ll explore how technology can help support activism and where activism can push it forward.
Where: Surrey Central Library, 10350 University Dr., Surrey, BC.
About the event
NetSquared is coming to Surrey!
NetSquared Surrey is a community-driven nonprofit technology meetup and we welcome everyone who wants to use their tech skills for good or who wants to learn how they can use online tools to help tell their stories, fundraise, and change the world.
Our first event will be a double-header exploring how the rise of ubiquitious mobile connectivity is changing how nonprofits campaign.
7:00 – 7:45 pm: Connecting offline and online events: Twestival case study
7:45 – 8:30 pm: Winning the Mobile Revolution
Connecting offline and online events: Twestival case study
From the early days of social media, it has been used for social good. The ease and (often) free price tag of the medium combined with its potential reach is extremely valuable. When Rebecca first started her blogging career she used her voice (which was very small) to promote causes and run fundraisers like Blogathon (a 24-hour blogging marathon with pledges). Eventually Rebecca took her efforts offline and into events where real people, not just avatars and screen names, could gather to support a cause. The best example of this is Twestival, which united cities around the world to support local and global causes purely by promoting an event through Twitter. Twestival has been re-launched this year with a new format but Rebecca will be taking a look back at what made it so successful and how they’re changing up the model to make an even bigger global impact.
Winning the Mobile Revolution
Today, it’s likely that at least 20% of your website traffic comes
from mobile devices That number is rapidly increasing. So too is the
diversity of devices people are using to access your site. Today it’s
mostly smartphones and tablets, but in a few years visitors will be
visiting your site through their glasses or on wall-sized displays.
This session will decode that future, and provide valuable insights
into how the mobile revolution impacts your marketing and
communications activities. Attendees will leave with ideas and tips
they can implement immediately to improve their organization’s
mobile-readiness.

Darren Barefoot will be pitching a session on our mobile-centric future.
Get used to hearing the term ‘device diversity’. It refers to the fact that people are using more and more devices, from Google Glass to wall-sized TVs, to access the web. We’re already past the point of caring about ‘smartphone users vs. desktop users’ and now how to think about tablets, gaming consoles and web TVs.
I’m imagining this as a short talk by me, and then I’ll facilitate a group discussion about best practices and approaches to a mobile-centric future.
NetSquared Camp will be held Saturday, June 1. RSVP now!
Vanessa Chase will be pitching a discussion on email marketing.
Take your fundraising efforts digital by adding email marketing to your strategy. Whether you’re just getting started or are a seasoned pro, we’ll talk about the basics and best practices non-profits need to know and discuss solutions to the biggest problems you’re facing.
NetSquared Camp will be held Saturday, June 1. RSVP now!
Vanessa Chase will be pitching a discussion on the essential elements of copywriting.
Ever thought about how the language used in your communications and fundraising materials is affecting your success? Does your audience really “get” the work your non-profit is doing?
If writing seems like a mystery to you, fear not! We’ll explore the best tactics from writing in print and digital, methods for understanding your target audience and workshop your ideas.
NetSquared Camp will be held Saturday, June 1. RSVP now!
Starting a community can be daunting, and growing it can be even harder. How do you build your group so that it isn’t just you talking to an empty room?
The commbuild community came together on May 7 to share tips for marketing a new community (be authentic!) and leveraging the power of your network (be promiscuous!) More importantly they questioned whether control is desirable or even possible.
